The Symposium for International Research and Innovations in Schistosomiasis (SIRIS) will focus on our current understanding of schistosomiasis. In doing so it will bring together leading researchers and their knowledge of the biology of the infection as well as immune responses in infected hosts, epidemiology, modeling of infections to predict disease and infection outcomes, and the specific challenges that co-infection presents, and effective application of chemotherapy. These diverse scientific disciplines will combine to address the impact of schistosomiasis, particularly in the context of the disproportionate number of endemic low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) affected by schistosomiasis. For example, 90% of the burden of schistosomiasis is centered in sub-Saharan Africa. To understand and effectively tackle the diverse clinical and public health problems of schistosomiasis, we need to combine information derived from basic hypothesis-lead research, descriptive epidemiology and new computational modeling techniques. Only through venues such as SIRIS will humanity hope to advance more quickly towards global elimination of schistosomiasis.
SIRIS will be held in Lehman Auditorium (Basement Floor) of George Washington University's Science and Engineering Hall.
SIRIS, George Washington University, and BRI do not have financial relationships with any hotels. Some local hotels, however, may offer special rates for attendees of George Washington University-related events. We encourage SIRIS attendees to compare hotel rates.
